“Working to ensure that science is no longer a bargaining chip”. With this noble and ambitious goal in mind, the project Hablemos de Neurociencia was founded in 2015, a website that aims at bringing the broad and complex field of neuroscience to wider audiences. The founder of the project, Carla A. Carvalho Gómez, tells us about it.

1. What is Hablemos de Neurociencia?

Carla A. Carvalho Gómez, a graduate student of neuropsychology, started the project Hablemos de Neurocienciain the summer of 2015 with the primary goal of bringing the broad and complex field of neuroscience to all interested parties, both professionals and non-professionals, and offering a new perspective: scientific dissemination without limits.

To this end, we provide daily informative articles in clear and concise language from a multidisciplinary approach to neuroscience, from the perspective of neuropsychology, speech therapy, clinical psychology, occupational therapy, and even physiotherapy.

2. How did the project start?

During my internship as a graduate student, I identified a need for establishing a bidirectional relationship among the different professionals involved in the rehabilitation process of patients who had sustained or sustained brain injury.

My interest in understanding the work done by the different professionals involved in the aforementioned process, led me to carry out some research whose main goal was to find a platform that, in my view, would combine all the information necessary to understand this complex process.

However, after months of unfruitful research, I decided to start my own blog. I started off by writing about neuropsychology, my field of training.

I still remember the first five ‘likes’, the 20 first visits to my website, all from my family members who got together t0 encourage me to undertake this project.

Six months later, I was contacted by professionals who wanted to contributeto my blog, my little blog.

At this point, I decided to take a radical turn and create my own brand. I decided to risk everything and invest in this project, which has entailed great expense. This is how we, little by little, were able to add new sections until reaching the nine which make up the project right now. great

There is no doubt, however, that the project’s most significant accomplishment arrived thanks to Javier Tirapu, good friend and highly regarded professional in neuropsychology who, without any hesitation, decided to back the project by becoming our first interviewee.

From then on, everything went smoothly, although much remains to be done and we still have a long road ahead of us.

3. Which content will a person find visiting your website?

As mentioned earlier, Hablemos de Neurocienciaprovides daily informative articles in clear and concise language from a multidisciplinary approach to neuroscience.

Apart from that, our visitors will have the opportunity to get all kinds of materials, thus optimizing search time.

Users will be able to remain up-to-date on field-related news such as conferences, courses, and obtain firsthand information in real time.

In short, we seek to mix new technologies with neuroscience, in order to achieve maximum results.

4. Who is behind Hablemos de Neurociencia apart from you? How many professionals contribute

Hablemos de Neurociencia was  created by Carla Andreia Carvalho Gómez. However, little by little, other professionals from different research fields such as neuropsychology, speech therapy, physiotherapy, clinical psychology, and education among others have joined; at present, there are more than 50 active contributors.

In our interview section, we have also had the pleasure of talking with renowned professionals in the field of neuropsychology such as Javier Tirapu Ustárroz and Marcos Ríos-Lago.

5. What is your goal?

Hablemos de Neurociencia began approximately a year ago with a fundamental goal: Working to ensure that science is no longer a bargaining chip.

The project consists of a large group of professionals in the field, both working professionals and those in training, who invest their time and effort in providing truthful knowledge through primary academic sources and updated materials based on scientific evidence.

Additionally, these professionals seek to express that which is not written in books or manuals: their professional experience.

In most cases, access to the materials needed to conduct effective research or to be trained in the field of neuroscience is restricted

Hablemos de Neurociencia aims  to break down these barriers by providing users with access-free content: information and training within everyone’s reach.

If you are a passionate lover of neuroscience, in our website you will find the most current information and materialat a glance: neuroscience anytime, anywhere. In addition, you will keep track of the latest news and scientific advances, events, conferences, and training activities with just one click.

In short, our long-term goal is to become the reference and consultation web platform for professionals working in the field of neuroscience.

6. How does Hablemos de Neurocienciacontribute to neuroscience?

So far, there is no platform dedicated only and exclusively to the development of neuroscience, with information as varied and as rich as the information provided by us.

In most cases, these platforms are created with a specific goal, however, over time, this goal is often forgotten and information from other fields unrelated to the initial goal is introduced.

We are not exclusively a blog on scientific dissemination but we intend to go a step further by offering our visitors the possibility of being informed about all things related to neuroscience such as current news, on-site and off-site courses, conferences, etc.

Moreover, we provide our visitors with the necessary materials to do their work in a simpler and more efficient manner.

As a result, our website visitors–in comparison with other platforms’ visitors–will be able to find all the information grouped together in a single platform, thus significantly reducing search time.

Our visitors will be able to look up information needed anytime, anywhere, thanks to our mobile version.

7. Who is your target audience?

Hablemos de Neurociencia is aimed at both working professionals and those in training due to the specialized language used in the articles comprising the blog.

However, I know for a fact that some of the visitors are parents who are worried about their children; these people, without being experts, hope to understand the disease and the problems that their children must face daily.

8. Do you offer any training programs as well?

This is a very interesting question. We keep receiving e-mails asking about the possibility of teaching a course or requesting information about it. There is no doubt that all these suggestions are very stimulating, however, we want to do things in order, step by step, slowly but surely. Everything has its time.

It is indeed one of the projects that we would like to undertake. However, we must study the market carefully to offer our visitors the best options first.

Neuroscience is a booming field. Therefore, there are numerous courses offered, conferences, etc. However, the project was founded to create its own brand and break the rules.

We didn’t just want to do anything but to do something that would make us stand out from the rest and for that, we must work and continue with further training.

9. Which projects are you working on right now?

We are currently working on some projects that will be completed in September if everything goes according to plan.

Specifically, we are working on five new sections. Even though we don’t know whether they all will be ready on time, we intend to at least unveil three of them after the summer break.

So far, we cannot reveal anything else. The only thing we can say is that we will be collaborating with amazing professionals and reference centers.

10. What are your short-term goals and plans?

As I said, we are working on new sections due to be completed in September. However, there is more. We don’t stop working; to all of us behind this project, everyday is a new opportunity, a new learning experience that gets transformed into new ideas to be included on the website.

Right now, we have changed the design of our website to make it more accessible and appealing by offering visitors the possibility of finding what they are looking for with just one click.

There is no doubt that we have a long way to go. However, we are not alone since there are more and more professionals who are a part of the project, professionals who have joined our endeavor to bring science–neuroscience in particular–to all professionals in the field.
