Thomas Bak

Multilingualism from the point of view of neuroscience

Born and raised in Krakow, Poland, Dr. Thomas H Bak studied medicine in Germany, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. Since his doctorate in acute aphasias, his main interest was the relationship between language, the brain and the mind. He worked clinically in psychiatry, neurology and neurosurgery in Bern, Berlin and Cambridge and was part of the team that developed Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination (ACE) . In 1996 he founded the Clinic for the Disorders of Movement and Cognition at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. From 2010 to 2018 he was president of the World Federation of Neurology Research Group on Aphasia, Dementia and Cognitive Disorders (WFN RG ADCD) and organized teaching courses in cognitive neurology around the world, from South America to Asia.

Since 2006 he has been working at the Faculty of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences at the University of Edinburgh, where he continues to work on language and motor functions and to develop them with his colleagues at the Edinburgh Cognitive Assessment (ECAS).

In recent years, his work has increasingly focused on the impact of language learning and multilingualism on lifelong cognitive functions and on brain diseases such as dementia and stroke. He studies a wide range of populations, from Scotland to India, from Singapore to China. In addition to research and teaching, an important part of its work is public participation and knowledge sharing. Dr. Bak lectures in seven languages, is active on social media (@thbaketal) and appears regularly in the press, on radio and television, and at science and arts festivals. In his spare time, he enjoys poetry, cooking, travelling and, not surprisingly, learning languages.
