Usability and Design on Rehab

5.6kviews

Since NeuronUP took his first steps, usability and user-centric care have been present both on the platform and activities. NeuronUP´s continuous improvement of the user experience, adapting contents to the specific needs of professionals and patients, is one of our main pillars that allows us to develop the necessary skills to customize and motivate our end users..

The activities´ development team work to improve usability as it is defined by the ISO 924111 standard: “The degree to which a product can be used by specified users to achieve specified goals with effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction in a context of use ” .

In usability, the key to a good experience is determined by the hue between effectiveness and efficiency. Effectiveness is the ability to achieve the desired effect or the ability to achieve the objective, while efficiency is the ability to achieve a goal with the least possible effort.

Therefore, having an intuitive design with an interface adapted to our users, allows us to create an effective and efficient experience that has a direct impact on saving time for professional working with NeuronUP and an interaction focused  of our therapeutic approach activities.

The basis of the design of our platform are determined by Jakob Nielsen´s  10 Usability Heuristics for User Interface Design and Tognazzini among which we highlight three underlying our structure:

  1. Relation between the system and the real world, the system must use a user-familiar language with an understandable vocabulary and recognizable icons. The universality of visual language made Apple choose skeuphormism design in 2007 to guide their users inside the new touchable environment of its new phone before making the jump to the more abstract and flat current line.
  2. Consistency and standards, people follow certain patterns learned in childhood that allow us get used to the interface much faster. Let´s say, leaf through pictures from our tablet like the pages of a paper book.
  3. Use Default settings and values only in those cases where they have really sense, allowing delete or change them easily. Giving priority to the product adaptability without losing focus on ease of use.

Following these premises we prioritize visual language marked by a sober aesthetic style that allows us to fix user attention where the activity or platform require it, using graphics, color or small animations. This look and feel consists of an intuitive interface that empowers users feedback and we use  interaction design patterns that best suit cognitive functions to be exercised, making the patient´s effort to focus on making the activity and not be located within it.

NeuronUP is still evolving, listening to users and adapting its content from the fundamental principles of design and usability to be the reference tool in rehab and cognitive stimulation. 2016 will bring many new developments in this field.
